Top 5 Places You Must Visit in Enugu

Al-ameen Abolare • October 21, 2026

Enugu is a city with plenty to discover. From waterfalls hidden away in the hills to historic landscapes, unusual attractions and the calm waters of Nike Lake, there is more to Coal City than you probably know.

The city grew around coal mining during the colonial era and went on to become an important political and cultural centre in southeastern Nigeria. The name Enugu was derived from the Igbo words, “Énú Ụ́gwụ́,” which mean “top of the hill,” reflecting the city’s hilly geography.

There are natural attractions to explore, places to learn about the city's history, and leisure destinations where you can simply spend a good day outdoors.

If you're visiting Enugu or looking for somewhere new to explore in the city, here are five places worth adding to your list.

1. Upside Down House (first in southeast Nigeria, second in West Africa)

The Upside Down House at Landmark Nike Lake Resort is probably the most unusual attraction you can visit in Enugu.

Local folklore tells of Mazi Ogbuefi, an elder whose traditional compound was being carefully relocated to preserve its history. Midway through the move, a violent storm swept in, spinning the entire structure into the air. When the winds settled, the building had landed perfectly on its roof, fully intact, but flipped upside down.

Today, that story has been brought to life at Landmark Nike Lake Resort.

The Upside Down House is the first attraction of its kind in Southeast Nigeria and only the second in West Africa, where everything inside and outside the house is flipped upside down. Inside, Mazi Ogbuefi's personal space sits upside down, with vintage chairs still draped in traditional cloth. The chief's room and children's quarters feature antique pieces and old-school toys, and even the kitchen is furnished with local pots and utensils fixed overhead.

It is more than an unusual photo opportunity. The attraction draws from local stories and cultural elements to create something distinctly connected to Enugu.

Visit Landmark Nike Lake Resort to get an experience of the Upside Down House. Tickets are available on the official website.

2. Awhum Waterfall & Cave

Looking to add a little adventure with an adrenaline boost to visit? Put Awhum Waterfall on your list.

Located in Awhum, the waterfall is one of Enugu's most popular natural attractions, where water gushes down from a height of 30 meters, spilling over a limestone cave surrounded by lush vegetation. It creates a setting that feels like a place out of this world.

The journey to the waterfall is part of the adventure too. You get to walk through the surrounding landscape before arriving at the falls, making it a good option for anyone who enjoys a little exploration alongside their sightseeing.

Whether you want to take photographs, explore the area or simply spend some time surrounded by nature, Awhum Waterfall offers a change of pace from the city.

It is the kind of place where you can take your time and enjoy the beautiful scenery of nature.

3. Ngwo Pine Forest & Cave

Hidden among the pines, Ngwo Cave is one of Enugu’s most beautiful natural landscapes.

The area brings together two distinct attractions: tall pine trees that give the forest its distinctive character and a cave that adds an element of adventure to the visit.

Ngwo is a good option if you'd rather spend a few hours outdoors, walking through the forest, exploring the cave or simply taking in the scenery.

It also offers opportunities for hiking and exploration, making it particularly appealing if you enjoy outdoor activities.

Bring comfortable shoes, take your time and explore the surroundings. Sometimes, the less obvious places make for the better stories afterwards.

4. Nike Lake

For a more relaxed day out, Landmark Nike Lake Resort offers a very different kind of experience.

Nike Lake has long been part of the landscape of the Nike community and, in 1988, Nike Lake Resort was established along its banks. Today, Landmark Africa Group has developed the destination into a major leisure and hospitality destination in southeastern Nigeria.

The lake itself remains at the heart of the resort. Its calm waters and open surroundings provide a natural setting for slowing down, while the resort offers plenty to do if you would prefer a more active day.

You can take a boat ride, enjoy a meal, swim at the resort’s pool, ride quad bikes, try archery, play mini-golf or go horseback riding. Or you can simply find a comfortable spot by the lake and enjoy a slow afternoon.

And if you are looking for somewhere to spend the night after a full day of activities, the Landmark Nike Lake Resort hotel offers various accommodation choices with 210 rooms, suites, and villas.

5. Milliken Hill

The story of modern Enugu is closely tied to the hills around it, and Milliken Hill is one of the most significant.

Milliken Hill is a 4.8km winding road that goes up the hill, with the higher elevation opening up beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. It is also a place with historical significance.

But Milliken Hill is interesting for more than its scenery. It is closely connected to the history of coal mining in Enugu. Coal was discovered in the area in 1909, setting in motion the development of a mining industry that would transform Enugu into an important colonial town.

Today, you can take the drive up the hill, stop to take in the scenery and appreciate a different side of the city. But knowing what happened here makes the journey a little more interesting: you're travelling through a landscape that played a role in the story of how modern Enugu came to be.
